Car Key Cutting
Car Key Cutting in London: Mobile Service, Cut at Your Car
A car key needs two things to work: a blade cut to fit the lock and, on most cars built since the late 1990s, a chip programmed to the immobiliser. Secure Auto Locksmiths cuts car keys at your location across London, including keys for cars where every original has been lost. We work 24/7, we charge no call out fee and we give you the price before we travel. Call 07766 332691 with your make, model and year.
What Types of Car Key Can We Cut?
Not all keys are cut the same way, and the type decides how the job goes.
Standard edge-cut keys
These are the traditional keys with teeth along one or both edges. They are common on older cars and some budget models, and they can be duplicated quickly from a working key.
Laser cut keys
Also called sidewinder keys, these have a winding groove cut into the flat side of the blade. They are harder to duplicate, need a specialist machine, and are now common on many cars from the 2000s onwards.
Transponder and remote keys
Most modern keys have a blade plus a chip, and often remote buttons. The blade can be cut to the same pattern as the original, but the key will not start the engine until the chip is programmed. Our car key programming service finishes that step in the same visit.
Cutting a Key From the Original or From Scratch
If you have one working key, we copy it. That is the simplest route, and it is worth doing before you lose the only key you have.
If every key is lost, we cut a new one using the code for your lock. Where the data is available for your vehicle, this comes from the car’s VIN or lock details. Where it is not, we work from the lock itself. Either way you do not need a tow, because we bring the equipment to the car.
Why a Cut Key Alone Will Not Start the Car
A hardware shop can cut a blade that opens your door. It cannot link the chip to your car, so the engine stays immobilised. That is a common mistake with cheap spare keys, and it is why a properly cut key from a locksmith comes with the programming included where your car needs it.
Which Key Cutting Jobs We Take On
This is the work we handle most often:
- Spare keys for cars with one working key
- Replacement keys when all keys are lost
- Keys for vans and small commercial vehicles
- Worn keys that are hard to turn in the lock
- Broken keys that need a new blade
Why Cut a Spare Before You Lose the Last Key?
A spare cut from a working key is the cheapest and quickest version of the job. Waiting until the last key is gone turns it into a bigger job, and it can leave you stranded at a bad time. A spare also gives you something to hand a partner, a relative or a valet without risking the original.
What We Need From You
We need the make, model and year of the car, the registration, your ID and proof that you own it, such as the V5C logbook. We ask for these on every job, because a key cutter should never make a key for a car they cannot link to its owner. If you are not the registered keeper, tell us when you call and we will explain what documents help.
How the Job Works
We confirm the details on the phone, then come to the car with a cutting machine and a stock of common key blanks. We check your ID and proof of ownership, cut the blade, test it in the door and the ignition, and program the chip if the car needs it. If we do not have the right blank with us, we tell you at the start and explain the next step. We aim to finish in one visit.
How Much Does Car Key Cutting Cost?
The price depends on the type of key, the make of car and how many keys you need. A simple edge-cut spare costs less than a laser cut key with a chip and remote. You hear the full price on the phone before we travel, and there is no call out fee on top.

What has happened to your vehicle?
A call-out is rarely just “cut a key”. The first job is working out whether the fault is the key, the lock, the ignition or the immobiliser.
All keys are lost
In most cases a replacement can be cut and programmed at the vehicle, without an original key.
Keys locked inside
We use non-destructive entry methods, so there is no drilling and no damage to doors or paint.
Key will not turn
The fault could be the blade, the ignition barrel or the steering lock. A proper diagnosis saves needless repairs.
Car won't recognise the key
Transponder, key and immobiliser faults can look alike. Diagnostic tools show the real cause.

Car Key Cutting FAQs
Can you cut a car key without the original?
Yes, in most cases. We use the vehicle details or the lock itself to produce a new key, and we will explain the options before we start.
Is a cut key enough to start my car?
Only on older cars without an immobiliser. On most modern cars the chip also has to be programmed, and we do both in the same visit.
Can you cut keys for vans?
Yes, we cut and program keys for most vans and small commercial vehicles. Our van key replacement page has more detail.
Do you cut keys for classic cars?
Often yes, because older keys are simpler. Tell us the make and year when you call, so we can confirm whether we can supply the blank.
